Main Office Minutes

The Front Office has a few important reminders to help keep our school day running smoothly! 📣

Absent Notes: When your student is absent, please use the Excuse Note Booklet provided by the school to document the reason for the absence. If your student has a doctor’s note, the completed note from the booklet must still accompany the doctor’s note when submitted.

Morning arrival: Students are not permitted in the building before 8:55 a.m. Logan does not offer before-care or aftercare, so please plan accordingly—our doors are not open for early drop-off.

Dismissal: Please be mindful of your student’s designated dismissal time and arrive promptly for pickup. The Front Office closes at 4:30 p.m. daily, so we ask that families plan ahead and make every effort to pick up students on time.

We appreciate everyone doing their part to help us keep the school day safe, organized, and running like a well-oiled machine!

Honorable mention: Please keep your students information updated. Feel free to call into the office if you have any questions. 443-809-7052.

A message from your Principal!

What an exciting start to the school year! We ended the first marking period with an attendance rate of 95%, our highest yet! Thank you for making school attendance a priority and helping your children arrive ready to learn each day.

The following classes had the highest attendance rate for the month of October:

Kindergarten - Ms. Jones' Class (97.87%

First Grade - Ms. Shehata's Class (96.62%)

Second Grade - Mrs. Rafferty's Class (98.1%)

Third Grade - Ms. Artis' Class (97.49%)

Fourth Grade - Ms. Scannell's Class (96.97%)

Fifth Grade - Mrs. Riley (Werden)'s Class (97.46%)

Let's strive to keep these attendance rates going in our second marking period!

We are also excited to share that Logan maintained its 4-Star Rating on the Maryland Report Card! While we still have room to grow, particularly in academic achievement, this recognition reflects the progress we continue to make together. Families of current fourth- and fifth-grade students, please review the letter and your child’s MCAP performance report sent home last month. If you have questions about the results, please contact your child’s teacher or call the school.

Thank you to the families who participated in our first-ever Learn with Me experience! Your feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and I look forward to welcoming our second- and third-grade families on Wednesday, November 11. Families of fourth- and fifth-grade students and students in our regional K/ISDM program will have an opportunity to participate later this year.

As part of American Education Week, we will also host short, informational parent sessions on Thursday, November 19th, followed by an opportunity to visit your child’s classroom from 10:00–11:15 a.m. We hope you can join us to see the wonderful teaching and learning happening at Logan!

As we enter this season of gratitude, I am thankful for our students, dedicated staff, and supportive families. Thank you for your continued partnership and for all you do to help our school community thrive.

Community School Business

Hello, Logan Families!

My name is Tashara Branch, and I am excited to introduce myself as Logan Elementary's Community School Facilitator! My role is to strengthen connections between our school, families, and community by helping families access resources, services, and opportunities that support student success. Whether your family needs assistance with food, clothing, or other community supports, please don't hesitate to reach out. I am here to help!

This school year, Logan Elementary is conducting a Community School Needs Assessment to better understand what is working well at our school and where we can improve. As part of this process, we are looking for parents and caregivers to join our Shared Decision-Making Team (SDMT). This team will bring together families, school staff, and community members to share ideas, identify needs, celebrate strengths, and help shape the future of Logan Elementary.

Your voice matters, and we want to hear from you! If you are interested in joining our team, learning more about the needs assessment, or connecting with community resources, please reach out to me via email at tbranch@bcps.org or by phone 443-809-3503.

Library News

Thank you to all of our families who supported their children during our Scholastic Book Fair! We had a wonderful turnout throughout the week, including our evening event. It was exciting to see students choose books that interest them and build a love of reading!

Our next Book Fair will be our Buy One, Get One (BOGO) Book Fair in April. We look forward to another fun reading event!

Please continue to encourage your child to read at home each day. Also, remember to help your child bring their library books back to school on their scheduled library class day so they can return them and check out new books.

Thank you for supporting reading at home and at school!

Instrumental Music Notes

Ms. Lisa M. Schultze, Instrumental Music

Grade 5 Band & Orchestra lessons have begun! Students have weekly lessons posted in Schoology and sent home in Talking Points. Students should practice at home 2-3 times per week. As the weather changes, please do not leave musical instruments in your car overnight. String instruments can crack, and strings can break, pads on woodwind instruments can become unglued, and brass instrument parts will no longer move. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via email at lschultze@bcps.org or through Talking Points. I look forward to a wonderfully musical year! Thank you!

Playtime!

Grade Level! Grade Level!

KG

Kindergarten has been learning so much in the first quarter of school! This month we have started unit 3 in phonics, reading, writing, and math! So far in phonics we have learned the sound for letters a, b, c, d, i, m, n, p, s, and t. We have been working on sounding out and writing words with those sounds. Decodables come home at least once a week in your child’s folder, and this would be a great resource for them to practice reading at home. In reading, we are learning about people and places in a community and how a community can work together and bring a sense of belonging! We have continued to practice our counting to 20 or more, and now we will learn how to count by 2s to 20! We will also write equations, and show sums up to 5! Please continue to read with your child each day! Have a great November 😊

1st Grade

We are so proud of our first graders for continuing to Keep it Real and try their best in the classroom each and every day! We have been working hard to complete our Math Unit 2 Assessment and are almost ready to complete our Module 3 Wrap Up in reading.

In Math, we have learned how to use dominos to help us add and subtract. We also have learned about Fact Families and how they help us see that addition and subtraction are always connected. We have also used our number racks and other manipulatives to solve equations and story problems within 10. As we begin our next unit, we will continue to use our number rack, but this time we will be solving equations and story problems within 20.

In Reading, we have read both fiction and nonfiction stories about animals that taught us how different animals use their bodies to help them survive! We have learned about so many animals and read many different types of texts to gain so many interesting facts about them. We even wrote All About books about our favorite animal that we have learned about!

Lastly, in Phonics, we continue to use our daily routines for blending, word building, reading our decodable and learning new heart words. We have been learning about consonant diagraphs like ch, sh, th and wh and are now learning to read words with the ending ng.

We can't wait to see how our students continue to grow in the second quarter and to tell you all about it in our Parent Conferences.

2nd Grade

Can you believe we are already in November?! In reading, we are listening to, reading, and viewing a variety of texts and media that provide students with information about listening to each other and working out disagreements. In math, we will be focusing on strategies for multi-digit addition and subtraction within the range of 0 to 100. As the weather gets cooler, please make sure your child has a jacket and is dressed appropriately for the weather. Please be on the lookout for conference day information! We look forward to meeting with you and discussing your child's progress in 2nd grade so far!

3rd Grade

We have had a wonderful start to the school year with our classes. As the first quarter ends and the second quarter starts, please ensure that you are working with your student to complete their homework weekly.

Students are expected to be on time to school each day and will be marked tardy at 9:15. It is imperative you send in an excuse note if you child is absent. The school sent home color-coded notepads at the beginning of the year for this.

Please continue to discuss accountability and responsibility with your student. Many students are not practicing these virtues when conflict or situations are arising with peers or in the classroom.

Important Dates:

11/5 - Towson Field Trip

11/6 - House Day

11/10 - Ft. McHenry Field Trip

11/11 - Learn with Me Day! (More information to come)

11/16 - Conference Day

Please reach out to your child's teacher with any questions or concerns!

4th Grade

This month in math, students are taking their understanding of fractions to the next level! We will begin by learning strategies to compare fractions with like and unlike denominators using fraction models and number lines. From there, students will focus on finding equivalencies using visual representations and fraction tiles. Finally, we will build confidence in adding fractions with common denominators to help solve real-world word problems.

In English Language Arts, we are continuing to strengthen our reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Throughout the month, students will analyze various fictional texts to identify underlying lessons, morals, and central themes. Additionally, we will work extensively with informational texts to teach students how to analyze key details, gather evidence, and effectively support their claims in writing.

Thank you for your continued support at home! Please reach out if you have any questions.

5th Grade

Dear 5th Grade Families,

It's officially the end of Marking Period 1! Our fifth graders have been hard at work learning about numerical expressions and adding and subtracting fractions in math, healthy habits in health, and the properties of matter in science. We've also recently begun exploring the original 13 colonies in social studies! As we move into Marking Period 2, we look forward to building on these skills and continuing to grow as learners.

As we begin a new marking period, we want to remind students of the importance of respect, responsibility, and making positive choices. We are continuing to emphasize following directions, staying focused, completing assignments, and taking ownership of our actions and learning. We encourage families to reinforce these expectations at home as we work together to make our classrooms positive and productive learning environments. Thank you for your continued support!
